Working for the Lord,
Working to change the world
With perseverance, patience.
Trying doctrines against His Word
And rejecting teachers who didn’t align.
They were faithful in service, faithful in belief,
Faithful in doing for the Lord what needed to be done
And yet— they were reprimanded by His Son.
Their service had become empty,
Their arguments in vain.
For what was done in the LORD’s name,
Wasn’t done in love for Him.
They had left their first love.
Do you serve to serve Him?
Do you study to know of Him?
Have you left your first, most precious love:
The gracious God of love?
Repent, and remember from where you have fallen.
Do the first works you did when you first knew Him—
The joy, the time of joy in the morning,
First discovering His Word and faithfulness.
Repent, and love Him again,
Or see your witness end.
Overcome, and eat from the tree of life
In the Paradise of God.
The Ephesians—Revelation 2:1-7
by Rachel McGehee
I can be in danger of being like the Ephesians. They had it all right: they served patiently, and persevered; they studied and tried the new doctrines and teachers against the Word of God. They continued on, and did not become weary. And yet, they had somehow lost their first love.
Studying the things of God, and even serving Him, cannot take the place of knowing Him in an intentional, personal way. God saved us to have a relationship with us, not just to have us serve and study Him. He wants to spend time with us, and He wants our love as He continues to pour His love on us.
